Agile Engineering Design System Seminar for
Automotive Turbomachinery
Southfield (Detroit), MI - October 7, 2003

The Agile Engineering Design System Seminar is an excellent opportunity for automotive designers, analysts, and managers to see how our versatile, powerful, state-of-the-art turbomachinery design and analysis software can design, analyze and optimize rotating fluid machinery such as pumps, fans and turbochargers.

During the seminar the design of an automotive water cooling pump will be presented. The design approach that will be presented is applicable not only to pumps but to all classes of turbomachinery. The seminar will be of interest to all turbomachinery designers who want to see how off the shelf software from Concepts NREC, Fluent and Engineous can be used to build a complete design and analysis system for turbomachinery.

Automotive Design Example
During the seminar you will see a pump designed using our integrated design tool, EASy! for Pumps. The design will begin with the basic pump specifications of rotational speed, flow rates and head rise to create a one-dimensional design producing basic impeller and volute sizing as well as design and off design performance prediction.

Using the Agile Engineering Design System, the one-dimensional design will be transferred to a 3D CAD model of the impeller and volute. Next the iSIGHT optimization tool will be used to explore design space to find optimum pump impeller blade shapes to meet target blade loadings as established by historical Concepts NREC design practice.

The final step in the design process will be the analysis and optimization of the volute geometry using the Fluent solver. The transfer of the geometry and flow boundary conditions from EASy! for Pumps is seamless using the embedded Fluent volute module. In addition to hydraulics, geometrical constraints and low-cost manufacturing issues will be included in the design exercise.

Design, Analyze, Optimize
In engineering design, it often becomes necessary to explore the relevant parameter space, not just one or two cases. Our partnership enables the design engineer to do this with ease and efficiency.

Concepts NREC’s Agile Engineering Design System for turbomachinery has embedded both Engineous iSIGHT optimization software and FLUENT CFD software, enabling automated optimization of preliminary design and detailed design, including rapid CFD, FEA, and rotor dynamics.

For turbomachinery blades, secondary flow passages and components, iSIGHT and FLUENT software have been coupled together to perform design optimization of heat transfer, pressure drop, and flow distribution, among other flow related parameters, allowing complete automation for exploration of the parameter space.
