This course will provide both design and application engineers with an understanding of the mechanical aspects of turbomachinery design. Techniques by which a design can be optimized are emphasized, and process for analytical validation of new designs and developing new components for existing machines is described from preliminary through detailed design.

Throughout the course, the effective use of modern computer systems, FEA, and rotordynamics analysis codes is emphasized. The course also features design examples in Pushbutton FEA as well as lateral rotordynamics analysis in the  DyRoBeS® rotordynamics code.

Who Should Attend

Engineers in all turbomachinery fields, including but not limited to, compressors, pumps, turbines, turbochargers and drivelines for turbomachinery systems. This course is an excellent introduction and briefing for new engineers who are required to structurally validate and/or package machine designs, while established engineers will gain fresh insights and be introduced to the latest tools and analysis techniques.

Managers and sales personnel in these fields will gain insight into structural and rotordynamics qualification processes. Turbine maintenance and field service engineers and users will better appreciate the problems of machine design and packaging.


The course materials have been developed over many years and are regularly reviewed to ensure that they are kept up to date. Course material is based on internal R&D experience of Concepts NREC and developments published by colleagues in the turbomachinery industries and universities in the USA, Europe, and throughout the world.

Steve Kohr holds a B.S.M.E. and M.E.M.E. from The University of Hartford. He has a breadth of experience with structural and rotordynamic design optimization of radial and axial turbomachines. He specialized in structural design and analysis of static and rotating components to optimize life and minimize fatigue risk. Steve is now the Associate Director of CAE Software Product Management responsible for the development of the Agile suite of Concepts NREC software. Steve is also a 2020 MBA candidate in the Kelley Direct Program at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University.
