White River Junction, VT, USA – June 24, 2024 Concepts NREC announces it has been selected by AFWERX for a Direct-to-Phase II contract in the amount of $1,244,301 focused on developing an Integrated Cooling and Secondary Flow Design System to address the most pressing challenges in the Department of the Air Force (DAF).

The scope of Concepts NREC’s contract includes introducing state-of-the-art methods for the design, layout, and analysis of turbomachinery secondary flows in support of U.S. National Security objectives and under the counsel of leading aero-engine OEMs. This program will enable the design and optimization of critical secondary flow systems to a similar level of maturity that is currently available for primary flow paths. Concepts NREC’s work will also capitalize on their advanced CAE turbomachinery design software as the basis for development and provide full integration with the mature components of the software that are already available. The result will be a product applicable to all classes of turbomachinery and for all industries (both defense and non-defense related).

“Analytical methods have advanced to the point where there’s less and less potential for further improvements in the primary flow path.  Future gains in the performance and reliability of turbomachinery will come from better design of secondary flows,” comments Mark Anderson, Chief Technology Officer. “We’re very excited to be working with the Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX to improve the state of the art in turbomachinery design.”

The Air Force Research Laboratory and AFWERX have partnered to streamline the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process by accelerating the small business experience through faster proposal to award timelines, changing the pool of potential applicants by expanding opportunities to small business and eliminating bureaucratic overhead by continually implementing process improvement changes in contract execution. The DAF began offering the Open Topic SBIR/STTR program in 2018 which expanded the range of innovations the DAF funded and now on April 26, 2024, Concepts NREC will start its journey to create and provide innovative capabilities that will strengthen the national defense of the United States of America.
