Concepts NREC maintains a robust in-house research and development program. We hold over 70 patents worldwide, with numerous patents pending. We push past what has been done to explore what can be done.

Concepts NREC is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2016 certified and committed to providing our customers with products and services that meet international quality standards. Concepts NREC is also the leader of the global Advanced Centrifugal Pump and Compressor Consortium for Diffuser and Volute Design, an internationally sponsored research venture dedicated to advancing diffuser and volute design.

At Concepts NREC, we have the vision to create great designs, and a hard-earned reputation for delivering them.

Applied Research Program

Concepts NREC regularly conducts industry-sponsored consortia and internally funded projects that continue to expand our extensive knowledge and applied technology expertise.

Sponsors of Concepts NREC international consortia programs include equipment users, equipment manufacturers, government agencies, and independent research organizations. These collaborative, applied investigations generate important technical information and data on turbomachinery performance and reliability. Results are distributed exclusively to sponsors so they can improve product designs and resolve operational problems.

For over twenty years, consortium sponsors have received benefits that:

Capabilities

Concepts NREC’s manufacturing capabilities extend far beyond simply cutting metal. Our highly skilled machinists are backed by experienced design engineers with diverse technical backgrounds and software engineers who have produced industry-leading CAE and CAM programs. This broad expertise enables us to suggest more efficient manufacturing methods, materials, processes, and designs that meet customer needs while lowering their production costs.

Leveraged their R&D funds

Consortium programs are extremely cost-effective because sponsors receive advanced design and development technology while paying only a fraction of the cost of the entire project.

Directed the research to best suit their needs

Sponsors have the opportunity to participate in choosing the direction of the applied research by suggesting tasks and setting priorities among alternative approaches.

Kept up with advancing technology

Whether monitoring progress of the outside world or progress within a given organization, sponsors find the consortium programs very useful in keeping current with advancing technology.

Obtained valuable patent rights

Valuable technologies developed under consortium programs may be patented. Patent rights are granted to current participants of the project on a worldwide, royalty-free, nonexclusive license basis. Organizations joining later must pay a supplementary license fee to cover patent rights.

Trust the Experts in Turbomachinery

For over 60 years, we have helped leading global OEMs to improve the performance and manufacturability of their turbomachines.

This is a video of Concepts NREC's optional 3+2 Roughing Module that enables roughing out of impellers using 3-axis algorithms, keeping a constant tool vector. This strategy optimizes the toolpath to provide constant cutting load, making it suitable for high speed machining. This is extremely helpful for large (>0.5 m) diameter impellers and/or hard materials where roughing using the 5-axis strategies is less efficient.

A Little Something Different – Let’s Talk About Legal and Compliance, Part 1
by Bradley Leiser, Director of Contracts
The Corporate Transparency Act In this blog series, I plan to touch on a small variety of legal and compliance-related topics that are directly related to the day-to-day operations of small and large companies, including those in the turbomachinery realm. The series will include topics like confidentiality, the recent FTC attempt to ban non-compete agreements, and export/trade compliance. At the outset of each entry (including this one) I will remind readers that this publication is not legal advice, and it should not be relied upon as such. If you find that this discussion raises some questions for you, I encourage you to seek legal counsel.

Evaluating Manufacturability for Shrouded Impellers
by Ryan Lussier, CAM Software Product Manager
Design engineers are always looking for ways to push performance and efficiency. This can produce geometry which is challenging to machine and one of the first questions the manufacturing team needs to answer is, “Can we make this?” There are many factors at play here, such as machines, tools, processes, material, and the geometry itself, that come together to decide capability and feasibility. And sometimes very subtle changes in geometry can lead to massive improvements in manufacturability.

CFD-based Throughflow Analysis: Bridging the Gap Between 1D and 3D Analyses
by Steve Kohr, Director of Software Product Management & UX
Many of us have come to appreciate the expedience that 1D (meanline) analysis provides when scoping out a new design or revisiting a legacy design for use in a new application. However, we also know that this approach to design is heavily reliant on empirical models. Inherent in this design approach is, or should be, the acceptance that these empirical models are highly useful but obviously limiting and maybe not necessarily universally applicable. We are accepting the tradeoff of fidelity for time.
