A long history of manufacturing turbomachinery products

For over forty years, Concepts NREC has provided the total resources to design and manufacture complete, turnkey turbomachinery products – from short-run needs through production quantities. Concepts NREC product production services are especially well-suited for the manufacture of precision turbomachines, including various types of compressors, turbines, pumps, propulsors, propellers, fans, and blowers that incorporate complex blades, blisks, and impellers – including integrally shrouded wheels.

A complete manufacturing resource with engineering and test capabilities

Concepts NREC is a total resource provider of turbomachinery services to over six hundred companies worldwide. Meeting the widely diverse product and production requirements of various industries is made possible by Concepts NREC’s proprietary CAE design software and several state-of-the-art 5-axis machining centers driven by Concepts NREC’s proprietary CAM software that many consider to be “world’s best.” Combining modern manufacturing equipment with proven methods can significantly reduce production time and costs while improving product quality.

Concepts NREC developed and manufactures a unique refrigeration product for a customer who completes the package with instrumentation and controls.

Concepts NREC developed and manufactures a unique refrigeration product for a customer who completes the package with instrumentation and controls.

This pinnacle turbomachinery machine shop is designed to operate as an advanced technology development facility for the manufacture of prototypes and converts to a lean manufacturing environment for producing both production runs of components and complete machines. To complement this world-class facility, Concepts NREC can uniquely provide a One Team, One Solution approach to product manufacturing and a true synergy among all the disciplines responsible for successfully producing a customer’s product both economically and on schedule.

Option 1.

Manufacture products to customer specifications

Concepts NREC can manufacture turbomachinery products with true fidelity to the customer’s design. This resource can be especially valuable to manufacturers without adequate facilities and experience for highly specialized machining and fabrication. Concepts NREC can also provide added capacity for overflow manufacturing, or for companies who need to focus their full production capabilities on in-house development.

Option 2.

Manufacture improved products optimized for selected features

Concepts NREC can often improve a customer’s product design for both better performance and manufacturability. A combination of expert engineering and manufacturing resources can help identify unknowns and resolve design-for-manufacture issues early in production. These better manufacturing methods might include suggested materials to improve quality while further reducing machining times and scrap.

Option 3.

Design and manufacture turnkey solutions from concept through validation

Concepts NREC can design, prototype, test, optimize, and manufacture complete turbomachinery products. Assuming total project management, this One Team, One Solution approach provides a significant advantage when attempting to resolve difficult manufacturing problems that others might choose to avoid. And complete product support includes one source for maintenance and spare parts, plus repair and reconditioning as needed.

Concepts NREC also develops, manufactures, and sells its own products

In addition to contract manufacturing complete turbomachinery products for customers, Concepts NREC manufactures and sells specialized turbomachinery products that serve well-defined niche applications.

These products are jointly developed with customers who first establish a market need for a new or improved technology. Concepts NREC then supplies the development expertise to turn their specification into a successful product. However, rather than just providing services for a fee, development costs are shared, enabling Concepts NREC to establish additional applications and markets for the product and generate noncompetitive sales. The results allow development costs to be amortized over larger production quantities, and both companies further benefit by producing a better product at a lower cost.

 VAROC® Air Dynamometers

The VAROC Air Dynamometer is used by military and commercial organizations throughout the world and has established a new standard for testing aircraft and industrial gas-turbine engines. Three models, the V35, V35/85, and V250, provide an accurate, easy to use, easy to maintain, compact, lightweight, portable, and highly reliable test capability to measure the performance of over forty turboshaft engines ranging from 50 hp to 25,000 hp.

The patented design using ambient air as the fluid medium provides significant advantages over all other types of dynamometers. The VAROC Air Dynamometer can be installed in fixed test-cell installations or used in mobile field applications without extensive support equipment. Unlike water brakes, the VAROC can operate in any climate, including extreme temperatures, while eliminating a previous source of environmental pollution.

U.S. Patent Nos. 4744724, 5345827, 5426986. VAROC is a registered trademark of Concepts NREC

EDC Engine Driven Compressor

This unique engine driven compressor (EDC) provides pressurized and conditioned cabin air under varying conditions for a specific class of aircraft. The complete EDC was developed and manufactured by Concepts NREC to offer significant advantages over main-engine bleed systems and has been used for several years as a retrofit upgrade for certain turboprop aircraft, enabling them to fly higher and carry a larger payload.

The EDC consists of a single-stage centrifugal compressor driven through an integral gearbox and is equipped with variable inlet guide vanes that can modulate both pressure and flow at the same time. The EDC is currently used on turboprop aircraft by taking power off the accessory gearbox, but could also be driven by an electric or hydraulic motor.

 DeepChill Air Cycle Refrigeration System

Originally developed by Concepts NREC as an aircraft refrigeration system, this environmentally friendly DeepChill™ machine uses air as the refrigerant in place of CFCs or other harmful coolants. In addition to operating with zero CO2 emissions, both the system cycle and hardware are void of any harmful chemicals that might contribute to depletion of the ozone layer

While producing low-temperature air in the range of minus 60°F to minus 120°F, the system offers better efficiency than more traditional refrigeration cycles such as Cascade-, LN2-, and Ammonia-based systems, making air cycle refrigeration well suited and safe for food processing.

In further demonstrating the sustainability of this green turbomachinery technology, Concepts NREC employed proprietary Design-for-Manufacture techniques to reduce the number of components and thus cut down on replacement parts and maintenance costs.

Please contact Concepts NREC to discuss the application and economical operation of air cycle refrigeration for your low temperature cooling process.
