White River Junction, VT, USA – October 7, 2016Concepts NREC, the world’s leading turbomachinery design, development, testing, manufacturing, and software company, recently celebrated its 60th anniversary with a company party at its corporate headquarters in Vermont.

The roots of the company reach back to August of 1956 when Northern Research and Engineering Corporation (NREC) was founded in Cambridge, MA, with the charter “to engage in the business of scientific research and engineering in all fields of endeavor.”

In 1980, Concepts ETI was founded by Dr. David Japikse, with a focus on Education and Technology for Industry. Initial projects included a publication that summarized technical articles and a series of seminars for the turbomachinery community. Concepts ETI’s long-standing relationship with NREC started with co-presenting a weeklong seminar on design advances in turbomachinery held at a Digital Equipment facility in the Olympic Stadium in Munich, Germany.

In 2000, Concepts ETI acquired certain NREC assets, including their manufacturing and software businesses. In recognition of common expertise, combined assets, and history, the new organization is called Concepts NREC and headquartered in Vermont. Since then, the company has experienced tremendous growth and today has offices in London, India and China as well as a robust network of strategic partners throughout the world.

Some corporate highlights include:

  • Created the compact heat-exchanger software for the Apollo Space Program which was later used in the space shuttle program.
  • Developed the first turbomachinery-focused design software in the days of punched cards.
  • Created industry-leading CAE and CAM software used by major OEMs, including Dyson, Volvo, Holmes, and Daimler.
  • Leader of Advanced Centrifugal Pump and Compressor Consortium for Diffuser and Volute Design, an internationally sponsored research venture dedicated to advancing diffuser and volute design.

Today, Concepts NREC holds over 72 patents with many more pending. The company has grown from a small start-up to the world leader in turbomachinery-specific software and design. Concepts NREC is proud to help its clients make great strides in increasing the fuel efficiency of gas powered engines, find new and novel ways to meet today’s energy demands, and improve the efficiency of all types of turbomachines.

A new partnership with NUMECA International offers software customers access to FINE/Agile, the most advanced suite of turbomachinery software available. This integrated solution spans preliminary design through detailed 3D steady and unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The solution combines the best of both company’s capabilities: Concepts NREC’s Agile Engineering Design System®, with NUMECA International’s turbomachinery specific Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
